do i own website

Do I own my website?

Yes and no – it depends on the type of website platform you use.

SaaS websites (Squarespace, Shopify & Wix)

SaaS websites operate on a subscription model. You have full access to your site as long as your subscription is active.

However, SaaS websites cannot be downloaded or transferred to another platform. Technically, this means you’re leasing the website rather than owning it outright.

CMS websites (WordPress & Joomla)

CMS websites are self-hosted, meaning they sit in a hosting account that you control.

For small businesses, we usually recommend purchasing a hosting plan through a provider, but it’s also possible to manage your own hosting.

The website software and database can be:

  • Downloaded and modified offline.
  • Uploaded to a different hosting account if needed.

Ensuring full website control

If you want sole control of your website once it is launched, a CMS website is the best option.

  • You will own the domain name and hosting account.
  • We can build the website within your account, so ownership sits with you from day one.
  • After the project is complete, you can remove our access and change all passwords.

Further details regarding website ownership are outlined in the Website Development Contract, which is signed before the project begins.
